Types of RFID Tags
RFID tags are generally categorized into three main types: Passive RFID Tags, Active RFID Tags, and Semi-Passive RFID Tags. Each type offers different capabilities depending on the required read range, power source, and application.
Passive RFID Tags
Passive RFID tags operate without an internal battery. Instead, they receive energy from the radio-frequency signal transmitted by an RFID reader and use that energy to communicate data back to the reader. Depending on the RFID system, tag design, antenna, reader, and operating environment, passive RFID tags can provide read ranges of up to approximately 30 meters.
Active RFID Tags
Active RFID tags contain an internal battery that powers the tag’s communication and electronic functions. They generally provide a much longer read range than passive RFID tags, with certain systems capable of reaching distances of up to approximately 1,000 meters. Active RFID tags are commonly used for large-area asset tracking, industrial monitoring, and real-time location applications.
Semi-Passive RFID Tags
Semi-passive RFID tags, also known as Battery-Assisted Passive (BAP) RFID Tags, use an internal battery to power onboard sensors or other electronic components. However, they typically communicate with RFID readers using backscatter technology, similar to passive RFID tags. This makes semi-passive RFID tags useful for applications that require additional sensing capabilities while retaining RFID-based communication.
